Geothermal energy systems make use of the heat that’s produced and stored naturally inside the Earth. Geothermal energy can be used for commercial, industrial, and residential heating purposes, for electricity production, and for efficient home heating and cooling through geothermal heat pumps.
Many technologies have been developed to take advantage of geothermal energy which is found in the shallow ground near the Earth’s surface that maintains a relatively constant temperature of 50 to 60 degrees.
In Eastern Pennsylvania, the presence of underground mines opens new doors for geothermal energy because water trapped in those mines may be used for heating and cooling applications on the surface. Researchers at the National Energy Technology Laboratory also said that, based on current energy prices, geothermal heat pump systems using mine water could reduce annual costs for heating by two-thirds and for cooling by half over conventional methods.
In fact, NETL scientists called mining regions in the United States “the Saudi Arabia of geothermal energy.”
